Smarter Data for Smarter Recovery

THE CHALLENGE

BMI Resource Recovery (BMI) is recognised as a leading organisation supporting growth in Australia’s circular economy. BMI manages a portfolio of landfill and resource recovery facilities, transfer stations, and three former mining and quarry sites currently undergoing rehabilitation across Southeast Queensland. Each site is subject to distinct regulatory obligations and environmental compliance requirements, which are supported by monitoring programs covering soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater.

Environmental data is collected across these sites by both internal staff and external contractors, creating challenges in data consolidation, quality assurance, reporting consistency, and long term accessibility. Historically, BMI have managed more than 63,000 environmental records of field and laboratory data with standalone data files. With a growing portfolio of sites and increasingly complex Environmental Protection Licence (EPL) obligations, BMI sought a scalable, centralised environmental data management solution to establish a single, reliable source of truth for environmental monitoring data.

THE SOLUTION

ESdat was successfully implemented with a single source of truth for BMI’s environmental monitoring data, consolidating historical datasets comprising field data dating back to 2009 and laboratory analytical results from 2013 into a robust, scalable solution for ongoing data management across all sites. To further streamline on-site operations, BMI also implemented ESdat’s Field Workflow module to manage the full lifecycle of environmental monitoring activities. This enabled efficient planning and scheduling of sampling programs, while field staff and contractors used the ESdat Field App to capture data digitally on site, improving consistency and directly linking field activities to the central database.

Laboratory results, once stored in PDFs and spreadsheets, are now automatically imported into ESdat, eliminating manual handling during reporting periods and significantly improving data reliability. Through a fully integrated workflow, from planning and field sampling to laboratory analysis. BMI benefits from a seamless, end-to-end process that delivers a clear, real-time view of environmental performance across its operations.

THE RESULTS

ESdat gives BMI a centralised, scalable platform for managing environmental monitoring across its landfill, resource recovery, and rehabilitation sites. By bringing historical and ongoing field and laboratory data together into one reliable source of truth, BMI has reduced manual handling, improved data consistency, streamlined reporting, and strengthened confidence in day-to-day operational and compliance decision-making across its growing portfolio.

“Esdat has transformed the way BMI manages environmental data, providing a single source of truth that supports better compliance, stronger environmental decision-making and proactive risk management. The implementation team's expertise, responsiveness and willingness to work alongside us have been instrumental in the success of the project.”

Celebrating a Well-Deserved Win!

Congratulations BMI Group!

The results are in, and the team at ESdat are very happy to see our client BMI Group has been awarded the Waste Recycling Industry Association (QLD) Inc (WRIQ) Environmental Innovation of the Year Award for its Environmental Risk Management Transformation.

“BMI Group has transformed its environmental data management by replacing spreadsheet-based records with a centralised environmental database. The new platform brings together information from across BMI’s sites and environmental monitoring locations, making complex data easier to access, analyse and manage. The result is improved data quality, stronger trend analysis and greater confidence in compliance, while reducing the time and effort required to manage environmental information.
